A Letter from our hearts….

As an organization, we are making a change to our overall child sponsorship model. We believe this change is a vital step towards better serving the girls and young women in our care..

We have decided to discontinue the child sponsorship model for the following reasons:

  1. Culture: The child sponsorship model is not the best representation of the Family Culture we desire to exemplify. We are always seeking to learn how to better serve and honor the precious ones in our care and we want to invite you on this journey with us.

  2. Impartiality: The traditional model we have historically used for child sponsorship is structured so that a donor/sponsor chooses a child to financially support. While we believe this form of support is motivated by a genuine heart, this model naturally creates an environment and culture of choice. We do not want to reinforce the idea that one child is being chosen over another because in a family all children are wanted, valued and chosen.

  3. Protection: Child sponsorship fluctuates and not every child is consistently and fully sponsored or sponsored at all. We want to avoid the possibility of our children finding out this information through sponsor communication or even through a sponsor visit on future Just1 Team trips. While this information is not communicated to the children in our care, we aim to protect each child from unintended harm and ensure that they know and believe that they are loved equally.

  4. Communication: The child sponsorship model has proven difficult to ensure each child gets an equal number of letters due to some children having more than one sponsor. Also, if a child’s communication with their sponsor suddenly stops, feelings of loss and rejection can be exacerbated, opening up/triggering old trauma wounds. It is our duty to protect the children in our care to the very best of our ability and be mindful of situations that could exacerbate emotional trauma.

We still encourage our community to write to our children a few times a year as we are better able to ensure the equal distribution of letters through this method. Email us at info@just1.org to sign up to write a letter to a child next time there’s an opportunity.

  5. Sustainability: The cost of providing for all the needs of the children in our care fluctuates based on a variety of circumstances, such as cost of living changes, school cost, medical care, unforeseen needs, etc. It is difficult to maintain a fixed cost for sponsorship in light of these unpredictable variables. We believe it is much more sustainable to rally our community together to support the ongoing needs of those in our care.

SPONSORSHIP IS MONTHLY, BUT FAMILY IS FOREVER.

In place of child sponsorship, we have launched The Family; a committed community of monthly donors who are bringing freedom and restoration to young women and children rescued from slavery and exploitation. Click here to learn about The Family.

What may be a change in rhetoric is not a change in placement. For those who already sponsor a child, we want to welcome you into The Family as a vital member, as your impact continues to transform and restore the lives of our girls. This means that your monthly donation will continue to go to the same place as it was under the child sponsorship model providing for the needs of the children in our Safe House in Kenya. If you have any questions regarding your sponsorship, we are more than happy to speak with you on the phone or through email. Your partnership with Just1 is such a blessing and we deeply value your trust in us as an organization.

If you are not already a part of The Family, we personally want to invite you to join The Family today. To fully fund the current needs of all 18 girls in our Kenya Safe House, we need to raise another $2000 a month. That means if 80 people join The Family at $25 a month, we will have every need met. Or 40 at $50 a month, or 20 at $100 a month.

A Family does whatever it takes to meet the needs of their own.

Together, we will be that family.

We are deeply grateful for your support and generosity and cannot express the magnitude of the impact you are making on these girls lives. We invite you to reach out to us with any questions you have at our email: caitlin@just1.org.

Together for the one,

Caitlin Crane
